Team: Prof De Ridder, Dr Siska Van Bruwaene, Piet Eelen, Gonda Martens:
Goal: Fistula-surgery in Hopital St Luc Kisantu / teaching urology.
At the start of the mission 21 patients were evaluated in the outpatient clinic bij Prof. De Ridder, Dr Siska Van Bruwaene, Dr Jean Ndundu and Ms Joyvette, maternity nurse. Sixteen of them were selected for reconstructive surgery after wich the surgery plan for the next 4 days was fixed. Other patients recieved medication to treat an overactive bladder or were advised to do physiotherapy sessions to treat stress incontinence.
In the meantime the stock of surgical instruments and general equipment was evaluated by Gonda Martens ( surgical nurse) and Piet Eelen ( ward, postoperative nurse). They made a list of necessary equipment for each patient and prepared and sterilised all the items ready to start surgery.
Patients underwent surgery from 09/04 till 12/04: eleven patients were operated for the first time, four underwent reintervention surgery of which two suffered from a small persistent fistula that needed to be closed, one suffered from a biggger fistula and received an additional vaginal restorative operation. The fourth patient had already experienced three recurrences and was deemed unsuitable for further vaginal repair, so an uterosigmoidostomy was performed.
On Tuesday and Wednesday information sessions were organised for nurses and trainees at the maternity on the pathogenesis and postoperative care in vesico-vaginal surgery.
